The post Las Vegas Sands Flustered as Long Island Residents Take Fire at Nassau Coliseum Casino appeared first on Vegas Slots Online News.

Wishful thinking?

Las Vegas Sands might be wishing they’d never bid around $4bn to convert the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island into a casino resort.

locals aren’t letting the matter rest

Despite LVS recently pulling out of the race for one of three downstate New York casino licenses following a refreshed $7.6bn price tag for the Long Island project, locals aren’t letting the matter rest.

According to the New York Post, incensed Nassau residents lashed out at the Coliseum casino plan during a five-hour Hempstead Town Board meeting on Tuesday.

Since LVS withdrew, the Coliseum development no longer has a casino developer behind it. That hasn’t stopped Hempstead Town, who want the rezoning of the Uniondale land and is “pressing forward, with Sands still on the lease.”

Sands blowing in the wind

According to reports, over 200 people attended the Hempstead meeting, with the majority of the near 100 speakers trashing the casino proposal.

The Post stated that “resident after resident urged the board to hit pause on the entire process — or kill the proposal altogether — until a clear plan and developer are in place.”

While local lawmakers are hustling to get land-use approval on the 72-acre Uniondale site, LVS’ exit vacuum could, according to Nassau locals, result in a totally unknown casino firm getting the jump on the casino.

LVS has until June 27 for another party to step in and end its pain over the Coliseum. An LVS attorney, however, told the hostile crowd that “discussions are still ongoing and the company is hopeful that a deal can still be reached.”

unlikely that a new developer will be selected”

LVS legal representative Daniel Baker admitted to the zoning board hearing that the June 27 deadline means it is “unlikely that a new developer will be selected, or that the rezoning will be finalized in time.”

In the meantime

Baker’s contribution at the Hempstead meeting only seemed to throw more gasoline on the fire for the locals’ long-abiding grudge.

Multiple residents given the floor at the meeting urged the Hempstead Town Board to freeze the Coliseum rezoning process or “kill the proposal altogether” until a transparent plan and developer enter the process.

Ultimately, while some Nassau residents are open to the War Veterans site being redeveloped, they don’t want a casino brand, particularly an unknown 11th-hour player, to surprise them.

Residents and critics of the casino plan have long criticized the proposed casino site as being close to local schools, concerned about a potential increase in gambling addiction, crime, and traffic congestion.

The post Amazon’s Under-Fire Zoox Inks Robotaxi Deal With Resorts World Las Vegas appeared first on Vegas Slots Online News.

The Amazon-owned autonomous vehicle brand Zoox has inked a high profile deal with Resorts World Las Vegas despite being under fire for a recent San Francisco crash.

Zoox on Thursday issued another software recall following a scooter accident in San Francisco, just days after Resorts World announced the brand would be its first official robotaxi partner.

Zoox took to X with a video of its Resorts World deal, the first official robotaxi firm and Vegas resort tie-up:

According to a news release, Resorts World will grant Zoox a “dedicated and branded pickup and drop-off location” for the robotaxi fleet at the property.

Resorts World Las Vegas President and CFO Carlos Castro stated the Zoox tie-up reflects his firm’s commitment to “integrating technology solutions that elevate our service offerings and enhance how guests experience our property.”

Castro added that introducing the robotaxis will strengthen Vegas’s position “as a global innovation hub.”

While an AI-run hotel is taking reservations for July in Vegas, and vehicles that have no manual controls may be the future of Sin City, the Zoox brand has other day-to-day issues to address in California.

At a San Francisco intersection on May 8, an unoccupied Zoox robotaxi hit a slow-turning scooter rider. According to Reuters, the accident led Zoox to temporarily freeze on-road operations while it reviewed the incident.

The post Resorts World Las Vegas Gets Rid of $18 Self-Parking Charge to Try Drum Up Business appeared first on Vegas Slots Online News.

Resorts World Las Vegas has been in the news for all the wrong reasons in recent months. Some of the recent headlines have been about the failed MrBeast Experience and the replacement of the property’s CEO after just four months in charge.

encourage both local and out-of-state visitors”

The latest news item is a positive one, with Resorts World Las Vegas planning to reintroduce free parking from June 2. This covers self-parking in both the hotel and guest parking garages, with the aim behind this move to “encourage both local and out-of-state visitors” to visit the facility. It eliminates the previous $18 charge. The promotion will last until August 28.

Most casinos on the Las Vegas Strip charge for parking now, something which wasn’t always the case. Visitors to the city feel like they’re getting squeezed in every which way, according to posts on social media.

For example, certain MGM Resorts properties are now charging $25 if guests want proper plates, glasses, and silverware with their room service. They can opt for the $10 option if they’re happy with food delivered in plastic boxes.

The post Nevada Bill Would Remove $300k Deposit When Entering High Roller Gaming Lounge appeared first on Vegas Slots Online News.

A bill that aims to lessen the requirements for people entering high roller gaming salons in Nevada has progressed through the House and Senate. Now it’s just up to Governor Joe Lombardo to sign Senate Bill 459 into law.

Private gaming salons are defined as areas reserved for people whose gambling budgets are in the six- and seven-figure ranges. The idea behind the legislation is to encourage big spenders to continue visiting casinos in the state despite other options popping up nationwide.

Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro is championing the bill after the idea was discussed during a workshop by the Nevada Gaming Control Board, which was trying to find ways to open up salons to the public when high rollers aren’t there.

getting rid of the $500 minimum bet requirement on salon slot machines

Changes in the bill include getting rid of the $500 minimum bet requirement on salon slot machines, the need to have table games, and the elimination of the mandated $300,000 deposit in order to enter. Casinos will have more autonomy to set their own entry requirements.

Talking about the bill, Nevada Resort Association President Virginia Valentine said that the proposals are “common sense” and will be of great benefit to properties in the region.

The post Concern Mounting as Las Vegas Strip Revenue Drops for Third Straight Month appeared first on Vegas Slots Online News.

Lower visitor numbers to Las Vegas are having an impact on revenues, with Strip properties seeing a year-on-year decline for the third successive month. Gross gaming revenue was $647m in April, a 3% drop compared to April 2024. Statewide revenue was only down 0.5% for the same period.

The figures do show that handle was still up 2.3% for slot machine play, though revenue from those games fell 5.3%. Non-baccarat table games saw a similar trend, with sportsbooks and baccarat tables helping soften the decline.

visitor numbers to Las Vegas fell 5.1% for the month

Despite the massively popular WrestleMania taking place at Allegiant Stadium, visitor numbers to Las Vegas fell 5.1% for the month, and total air passengers at Harry Reid International Airport were 3.4% lower year-on-year.

Analysts point to several reasons for the decreasing interest levels, most notably consumer uncertainty, the high cost of living, and disruptive federal policies.

One bright spot was convention attendance, which continues to bounce back from the pandemic-related issues, rising 14% compared to April 2024. This boost was attributed by the rotation into Las Vegas of shows that took place elsewhere in 2024, such as the International Sign Expo, American Urological Association, and The Car Wash Show.

The post UK Gambling Commission Criticized Over Statistical Errors appeared first on Vegas Slots Online News.

Gambling figures questioned

The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has come under scrutiny from the UK’s statistics watchdog amid concerns that it could be overestimating the number of problem gamblers in the country.

The Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR) published a full review of the Gambling Survey for Great Britain (GSGB) after there were several claims that the methods used to collect and interpret the data were potentially flawed.

stopped short of accusing the UKGC of any breach of statistical standards

In the review, the OSR identified four areas where improvement should be made in order to better adhere to the Code of Practice for Statistics. However, it stopped short of accusing the UKGC of any breach of statistical standards.

Overestimations

The GSGB has often shown far higher levels of gambling addiction in the UK than in comparable surveys, such as the Health Survey for England (HSE.)

The UKGC has historically credited this discrepancy to the “social desirability bias,” which claims that people will often under-report behavior with a negative perception, such as gambling addiction, when being interviewed face-to-face.

there is a non-negligible risk that they substantially over-state the true level of gambling”

In a review of the GSGB in 2024, Professor Patrick Sturgis warned that “there is a non-negligible risk that they substantially over-state the true level of gambling and gambling harm in the population.” Among the potential concerns was that response propensity will be higher amongst gamblers when gambling is mentioned as the focus of the survey in the invitation letter.

This is because we know that people are more likely to take part in a survey if the topic is personally salient to them. This would help to explain why a survey that is explicitly about gambling obtains a higher response rate amongst gamblers than a survey that is generically about “health.”

The OSR warned that these caveats, while included in the technical report, were not prominently displayed throughout to clearly inform readers of the uncertainty surrounding the data.

UKGC response slammed

Responding to the report, UKGC director of research and statistics Ben Haden said: “We welcome the findings from OSR, both the public statement regarding casework they have received in relation to GSGB and their overall review of the GSGB.

“We are pleased they recognize the huge amount of work that the team has put into developing and delivering the largest survey of its kind in the world. We also welcome OSR’s recommendations for further action, which closely align with work that we already have underway.”

The UKGC has begun implementing some of the report already, updating user guidance and commencing with plans to test some of the possible issues with the survey’s methodology.

However, the response was dismissed as failing to admit to their failings in other quarters. “One would be hard-pressed to find any acceptance of [the] criticisms in the Gambling Commission’s statement on the review, which perceives nothing but praise for its endeavors,” said analysts at Regulus Partners, a long-term critic of the UKGC.

“The OSR review is a golden opportunity for the Gambling Commission to do the right thing — to show that it has listened by acknowledging past missteps. Its initial response is not encouraging. It has either misinterpreted the OSR’s review or chosen to misrepresent it — neither of which can foster trust. Those who whitewash criticism are unlikely to learn from it.”

The post Fontainebleau Las Vegas Security Escorts Dozens of Fired Table Games Dealers Outside appeared first on Vegas Slots Online News.

Rumors emerged last week that the Fontainebleau Las Vegas was planning to significantly cut down on the number of table game dealers it employs and slash the hours for those who will stay on. In anticipation of the job losses, employees were reportedly considering banding together for a class-action lawsuit.

These lay-offs are now a reality, if reports are to be believed, with dozens of dealers receiving emails that they had to meet with their Table Games Department leader on Tuesday. Most were then told they were being let go from their positions:

Security staff escorted these people off the premises after their meetings, sources say, something which has caused consternation on social media. Some X posters deemed the dismissal humiliating and traumatic because the staff members were not permitted to leave of their own volition.

This is just the latest round of lay-offs at the Fontainebleau, which only opened for business in December 2023. Things haven’t gone to plan to date, with visitor numbers being underwhelming.

The property is also the subject of an anti-money laundering investigation

The property is also the subject of an anti-money laundering investigation, which the Nevada Gaming Commission accidentally revealed during a meeting on Thursday. If the Fontainebleau is found to be in the wrong, it could face a multimillion-dollar fine, similar to the MGM Grand and Resorts Las Vegas which were hit with $8.5m and $10.5m penalties, respectively, for similar issues.

The post Culinary Union Secures Biggest Wage Increase for Las Vegas Casino Workers in 90-Year History appeared first on Vegas Slots Online News.

The Las Vegas Culinary Union has announced that it has struck tentative agreements with several casino resorts in Las Vegas. The three-year agreement with almost 2,000 Resorts World workers brings the contract onto the same timeline as the other properties on the Strip.

Another property on the list is MGM Resorts International-owned The Cosmopolitan, whose 2,500 employees will secure their biggest wage jumps in the 90-year history of the unions. Other parts of the agreement include healthcare benefits and workload reductions.

the Strip is now 100% unionized

Culinary Union Secretary-Treasurer Ted Pappageorge remarked that in the organization’s 90th year, the Strip is now 100% unionized and that the new agreements are “a win for workers, the company, and the future of Las Vegas.”

While not a casino, Harry Reid International Airport has also reached a middle ground with the Culinary Union, signing a five-year contract for 1,100 workers. Members still need to green-light the new contracts before they take effect.

The post London Casino Exec Praises UK Government for Casino Reforms appeared first on Vegas Slots Online News.

The head of London’s most famous gambling establishment has praised the UK government for its forthcoming brick-and-mortar casino reforms.

Hippodrome Casino Executive Chairman Simon Thomas stated Monday that the reforms will boost investment and the UK’s late-night economy.

green light we’ve been waiting for”

Thomas said the UK’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS)’s plan for casino reform was the “green light we’ve been waiting for.”

According to reports, the Hippodrome’s chief exec was satisfied with fresh regulations the DCMS presented recently to parliament, while addressing what he called “archaic” rules under the Casinos (Gaming Machines and Mandatory Conditions) category.

The DCMS’ proposed rules include “raising the ceiling on Category B machines to 80 per venue, permitting sports betting in all casinos.”

Thomas stated the changes will “unlock millions of pounds in investment into city centers and high streets, allowing businesses to modernize, innovate and grow.”

While Thomas said the reforms weren’t “revolutionary” he stated the casino industry was “delighted to welcome these modest modernization reforms.”
